Portrait photography is all about capturing the essence of the subject. For the photographer, this goes beyond all the know technical know-how and using a good camera to create a portrait, while directing the subject’s poses and facial expressions. Because if the subject doesn’t have self-confidence, it will show in their final images. They must be comfortable and confident in front of the camera. So here are my tips for helping build self-confidence for your portraits:
Dress for Success
It’s important to wear an outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Choose something that reflects your personal style and makes you feel good. Think about how clothing can transform you into the best version of yourself, just as a costume transforms an actor into that character. Look good and you will see a difference in how you act!
Practice Posing
Take some time to practice poses in front of a mirror. See how you look best and let the photographer know if there are any poses you definitely want, or perhaps, feel you don’t look as good doing. You can find posing ideas in the Brandon Carter Photography Senior Gallery or on Pinterest.
Take Deep Breaths
If you're feeling nervous or anxious, take a few deep breaths to calm yourself down. It will help you relax and feel more comfortable.
Remember Your Worth
It's important to remember that you are unique and valuable! Focus on your strengths and what makes you special.
Think Positive
Positive self-talk can go a long way in building self-confidence. Focus on positive thoughts and affirmations, and avoid anything negative.
Have Fun
Remember, a photo session should be fun! Try to relax and enjoy the experience. When you're having fun, it will show in your photos.
By practicing these tips, you'll be on your way to feeling confident and comfortable in front of the camera. Remember, YOU are unique and valuable, and your portraits should reflect that. I just love seeing how shy or non-confident people just open up as a session goes on. You can literally see their confidence rise and it just shines through in their images!
